Health sharing versus short-term insurance
Short-term medical is still insurance — limited, medically underwritten, and often full of exclusions. Health sharing is not insurance at all.
Health sharing is not insurance. Programs are not legally required to pay medical expenses and do not have to provide Affordable Care Act protections. NAIC consumer guidance.
Underwriting
Short-term plans can deny or exclude based on health history. Health shares use guidelines and waiting periods instead of an insurance contract.
Duration
Short-term coverage is time-limited by design. Sharing memberships are usually month-to-month under guidelines.
Neither is a Marketplace plan
Both lack the full ACA protection set. Short-term is still regulated as insurance; sharing is not.
